To support for the sport, its competitions, and the plan to make Maricá the national capital of beach handball, by holding state, national and international championships, in partnership with the Brazilian Handball Confederation (CBHb) and the Municipal Sports and Leisure Department, allied to the Municipal Education Department, which bridges the gap with schoolchildren by facilitating their participation in events and in beach handball workshops and clinics.
In search of new talent in Maricá, five Beach Handball beginners’ centers have been set up to offer free sport lessons: Barra de Maricá, Itaipuaçu (Barroco), Nanci Park, Orla Marine and Flamengo (Praça Linear). The city is also used for the Brazilian team’s training weeks before major competitions and has already hosted the Canadian team.
In 2024, at the third year where Marica held Beach Handball competitions, the city hosted the Global Tour, also organized by Maricá City Hall, through the Maricá Development Company (Codemar), in partnership with the Brazilian Handball Confederation (CBhb). The teams from Brazil, Germany, Argentina, the United States, Puerto Rico, Portugal, Qatar and Uruguay took part in the competition. All the matches were broadcast live on CBhb’s YouTube channel.
The Brazilian men’s and women’s teams were the champions of the first stage of the international Beach Handball circuit, the Global Tour, which ended in May 2024, in the arena set up in Barra de Maricá. The men beat Germany and the women defeated Argentina, both by the score of 2 sets to 0. There were also disputes for third place, won by Uruguay (in the women’s) and Argentina (in the men’s).
